Trail Overview

Trail 16 is a short but highly technical route located within the Cline Butte OHV area. The trail begins with rolling high-desert terrain that allows drivers to assess conditions before committing to the more challenging upper section. As elevation and terrain tighten, the route transitions into a series of large rock obstacles that require careful tire placement, throttle control, and adequate ground clearance. The primary obstacle sits near the midpoint and sets the tone for the remainder of the trail, followed by a compact rock garden loop that returns users back toward the starting area. Despite measuring just under one mile in length, Trail 16 delivers concentrated technical difficulty in a confined space, making it a popular challenge route within the OHV area. The surrounding environment is open desert with limited vegetation, and cell service is unreliable throughout the trail. The route is generally closed during the winter months to reduce erosion and protect trail conditions.

Trail 16 is rated difficult due to large rock features, abrupt ledges, and tight approach angles that demand advanced driving techniques. The main obstacle requires significant articulation, controlled momentum, and sufficient tire size to clear without body contact. Vehicles equipped with 4WD, lockers, and larger tires are strongly recommended. Smaller tire setups may experience repeated attempts or be unable to complete the primary obstacle, particularly in dry conditions when traction is reduced. The rock garden loop maintains technical pressure with minimal opportunity for bypass.
