Trail Overview
This is a scenic trail from the Fish Creek Campground to the Fish Creek Overlook on Steens Mountain in Southern Oregon. Fish Creek Gorge is a deep, glacier-carved gorge on the low slope side of a fault block mountain. This area has excellent views of the high desert surrounding the Steens. There is camping off of this road, especially on or near the dried-up lake bed just South of Fish Lake.
Difficulty
Rugged but straightforward trail requiring reasonable clearance but passable by most 4x4 vehicles.
History
This area was traditionally used by the Paiute Indians, and was also used as sheep range for several generations, then cattle, then eventually became a wilderness area in 2000.
