Trail Overview

This 8.8-mile sandy corridor is a quintessential dune experience, serving as a primary North-South artery running parallel to the crashing Pacific Ocean. The route connects the northern 10 Mile OHV Trail to the southern hub of Horsefall Beach Campground, offering a continuous flow through the shifting landscape. The trail is an unmaintained, dynamic track characterized by rolling, wind-sculpted sand. Navigation is aided by white masonite stakes bearing distinctive orange diamond markers; the "road" is often whatever line you choose to cut across the soft expanse. Note: This is a high-energy recreation zone shared by motos, quads, and side-by-sides. OHV stickers and sand flags required.

Difficulty

The difficulty rating of 3 is derived entirely from the technical demands of driving on deep, shifting sand. The surface is consistently soft and yielding, forcing the vehicle to "float" rather than roll. Airing down tires to 10-15 PSI is absolutely mandatory to increase the tire contact patch and prevent digging in. Drivers must possess the skill to maintain momentum on ascents, read the dune face for sudden drop-offs ("razorbacks"), and manage wheel speed. Recovery gear (boards, shovel, strap) and an onboard air compressor to re-inflate tires are essential requirements for travel here.
