Trail Overview

Telegraph Trail (FS 15) is a solid choice for ATV and dirtbike riders looking for a moderately challenging OHV trail in southeastern Ohio. Winding through the Ironton Ranger District of Wayne National Forest, this route delivers classic Appalachian terrain with just enough technical features to keep things interesting. Expect a mix of dirt and loose rock under your tires, with rutted sections, embedded rocks, and occasional mud holes, especially after rain. The trail runs between Pine Creek Road and Brushy Fork Road and is open seasonally from April 15 to December 15, though closures can occur during wet conditions to protect the trail surface. Full-size 4x4s and side-by-sides aren't permitted here, so it's a quieter experience better suited for nimble machines. Telegraph Trail is legally designated for OHV use by the U.S. Forest Service, and you'll want to check the current Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUMs) for any access updates before you go. One veteran tip: after a good rain, this trail's clay-heavy soil turns slick fast--if your tires don't have the right bite, it's easy to get sideways on even the milder climbs.

Difficulty

Steep off camber with erosion and washouts. Slick, solid rock surface with a very steep grade right after a water crossing to get your tires wet. Trails are two-way. Stop, look, and listen for other riders coming from the other direction before attempting challenging sections. There can be a very deep water crossing at the north-east end of the trail. Beavers often flood the area.
