Trail Overview

This is a very scenic route around the North side of the Valles Caldera. It goes from the Jemez Mountains over to Espanola and is a great full-day loop with plenty of exploring to be done along the way. Excellent camping and diverse forests make this a great showcase for New Mexican off-roading.

Difficulty

The vast majority of this trail is easily doable in any vehicle with moderate ground clearance. There is one section towards the middle of the trip that is steep and rocky, but not unmanageable. The trail can become difficult when wet, and very slippery when snow covered.

The road is open despite what this app says. We accessed the road from 126 in Jemez and the gate is open.

Closed Gate
Gate is closed on west end of trail near Jemez. I found this out after driving from Espanola and had to drive the 65 miles back in order to get out of the forest. You can drive it, but know it is a 65 mile cul de sac!

Morning had higher traffic due to 18wheelers coming up and down the road. Otherwise quiet.
