Trail Overview

Veatch Canyon Road is a trail of two completely different worlds. If you are approaching from the west off Highway 722, the journey begins as a relaxing, easy-rated 1. This lower section meanders through the valley toward the base of the mountains, passing through stunning groves of Aspen trees and a few idyllic, dispersed campsites tucked near the creek. It is the perfect place for a quiet high-desert lunch under the shade of the trembling leaves. However, once you begin the ascent into the mountains, the trail turns "spicy" almost instantly. The difficulty ramps up to a 4 or 5 as the track becomes incredibly narrow and technical. You will navigate deep off-camber tilts and very long, loose sections of scree as the trail "goats" its way along the ridges toward the summit. The scenery is world-class, featuring unique rock formations and expansive views that demand a stop to appreciate, but the driving requires total concentration. Be prepared: your vehicle will receive "Arizona pinstripes" from the encroaching brush, and you'll likely pick up some mud as you traverse the natural springs that cross the tightest sections of the trail. Vehicle Size Warning: Strictly not recommended for full-size rigs. The trail is exceptionally narrow with very tight switchbacks and overgrown sections that are better suited for Jeeps, mid-size trucks, or UTVs. There is no cell service once you leave the Highway 722 corridor and enter the canyon. Download offline maps before you start your trip.

Difficulty

Rated a 4-5 due to the combination of extreme narrowness, high-exposure off-camber sections, and long, loose climbs where traction is a constant battle. Better suited for Jeeps, mid-size trucks, or UTVs. Expect unavoidable contact with heavy brush. Do not attempt this trail if you are concerned about your vehicle's paint finish.
