Flatwoods Spur B - FS 2438B

Trail Overview

Flatwoods Spur B (FS 2438B) is a natural dirt and gravel forest service road within the Potosi Unit of Mark Twain National Forest. The Flatwoods Spur B heads north from the main road, Flatwoods FS 2438, heading into the woods along the ridge going north and then east from the main ridge. The road has minimal elevation changes, over the spines of the ridge, crossing mended water holes filled with large gravel, climbing slightly uphill to the halfway point also the highest elevation point along the track. From here the path becomes mostly dirt, starting to track downhill to crossing small water collection spots and surface mud, leading to an opening, being the recommended turn around point, despite the MVUM sanctioned road turning north at this opening, going down a rocky hill to the legal endpoint at the valley bottom 700 feet later, there is room to three point turn here if users desire climbing this one hill, but from this point must turn around and head back out the way entered.

Difficulty

Flatwoods Spur B is given a base rating of 2/10 for being a semi-maintained gravel road for the first half, with signs of water holes being filled in with new coarse 4-inch minus gravel, with mild erosion and gravel washes on the mild elevation changes on which the track is laid out. It is safe to expect the basic gravel road complications, such as potholes, washboarding, and mounding of the gravel. For the second half, the road transitions to a mostly dirt path, with water collection holes, and surface mud, leading to the final rocky hill with 6-10" cobbles and loose coarse gravel, over erosion rutting. Difficulty can increase in times of wet conditions, heavy use, and through a lack of maintenance.
