Trail Overview

The first part of the trail splits between private property and national forest land and is smooth and well-maintained. The second portion of the trail is a rough and rugged route designed for off-road vehicles, including ATVs, side-by-sides, and 4WD trucks or Jeeps. While it starts off relatively smooth, the condition quickly deteriorates into unmaintained gravel and exposed rock. It becomes narrow and overgrown in places, with frequent ascents and descents, and several sections are noticeably off-camber. Branching trails diverge from the main route, though most appear unused. Evidence of past industrial activity, likely logging, is visible along the way, including areas where small trees have been uprooted or damaged. The trail passes by a bog, and some sections contain standing water and thick mud, especially after rainfall. Eventually, the trail dead-ends at a blocked area, where felled trees and rocks prevent further progress. This trail crosses both the Sturgeon River State Forest and the Superior National Forest. While there are no formal campgrounds, dispersed camping is generally permitted in the Superior National Forest (please confirm with local authorities before engaging in dispersed camping), provided it is outside the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. There are no amenities along the route--no toilets, trash bins, or water sources--and cell service may be unreliable or absent. If you plan to camp, ensure you follow Leave No Trace principles, stay within the guidelines regarding distance from roads and water sources, and check with the Forest Service for any restrictions or fire bans. The area's remoteness and trail condition make it suitable only for well-equipped vehicles and experienced drivers.
