Trail Overview
This section of the trail functions somewhat like a play area, offering multiple lines and route options over a large central rock pile. It's a great spot for drivers looking to test their rig's articulation and traction, as the natural terrain provides a variety of technical challenges. Some sections are steep and off-camber, requiring slow, controlled driving and careful tire placement to avoid tipping or sliding. Additionally, there are several large boulders where your vehicle may lean into the rocks depending on your chosen line, so extra caution is advised, especially for wider rigs. This area rewards skill and patience, and is best tackled by experienced drivers with proper vehicle protection.

Difficulty
This trail section leans toward the advanced side due to its mix of steep angles, off-camber surfaces, and large embedded boulders. It's more of a technical play zone than a pass-through trail, with multiple lines to choose from depending on your rig's capability and your comfort behind the wheel. The central rock pile offers both moderate and aggressive lines, but poor tire placement can easily result in body lean or contact with obstacles. It's a fun challenge for well-equipped vehicles, but definitely not suited for stock rigs. Skid plates, rock sliders, and a spotter are highly recommended.
History
The Iron Range OHV Recreation Area was built on reclaimed mining land, once part of the rich Mesabi Iron Range that fueled U.S. steel production for over a century. Today, this 1,200+ acre site blends industrial history with outdoor adventure, offering a rare chance to ride through the remnants of Minnesota's mining legacy.
