Trail Overview

This trail offers a moderate off-road experience with a few key features to be aware of. Along the route, you'll encounter several hills, some of which are moderately steep and may require low-range gearing depending on your vehicle and conditions. The trail also contains a handful of mud holes, some with soft, slick bottoms that can reduce traction and require careful throttle control. These spots could be challenging for vehicles without proper tires. However, aside from the hills and muddy sections, the trail remains relatively obstacle-free, making it manageable for most four-wheel-drive vehicles. It's a good trail for building confidence in mildly technical terrain.

Difficulty

While most of the trail is manageable, the presence of a few steeper hill climbs and soft-bottomed mud holes introduces challenges that require attention and vehicle control. Traction may be compromised in wet conditions, especially for stock or low-clearance rigs. No large rock obstacles or technical features are present, but drivers should still be prepared for varied terrain and potentially slick conditions.

History

The Iron Range OHV Recreation Area was built on reclaimed mining land, once part of the rich Mesabi Iron Range that fueled U.S. steel production for over a century. Today, this 1,200+ acre site blends industrial history with outdoor adventure, offering a rare chance to ride through the remnants of Minnesota's mining legacy.
