Trail Overview
This trail will take you through the "White River Special Area" within the Manistee National Forest. Starting this route on 168th Ave, you will be on a hard-packed gravel road, which will pass by a trailhead where you can park and walk trails if you would like. People also use this trailhead to unload horses to ride on the trails. After the trailhead, you will start seeing rustic camping spots, as a few are in this area. This route will wind through an area of thinned-out oaks, which makes visibility suitable. When you leave this area, you will go into an area restored to an Oak Savanna. After the Oak Savanna, the route will be more of a hard-packed sand that goes through a thicker wooded area mixed with oak and pine trees. There are a couple more rustic camping spots in this area. Overall, the roads are straightforward, with lovely views and little education about "Oak Savannas." There is also an area closed due to being a habitat for the endangered Karner Blue Butterfly. The road is open through that area, though. This is a sensitive area, so please Tread Lightly and stay on the trails and within the marked camping sites. You could encounter all kinds of wildlife in this area, and if you are there at the right time, you might even discover the endangered Karner Blue Butterfly.
