Trail Overview
Steinberg Road (FS 5502) is located in Manistee County, Michigan, within the Manistee National Forest. This trail runs from its intersection with Udell Fire Tower (FS 5207) and goes to its intersection with Pomeroy Road. This trail navigates through a variety of terrain as well as scenery. If traveling east to west, the trail will begin as a well-maintained gravel or sandy gravel forest road. There is ample clearance around the trail and enough room for vehicles to pass at slow speeds. The scenery in this section of the trail is dense hardwoods, with occasional clearings, followed by pine groves. As the trail progresses further west, it will begin to narrow up, as well as lose the clearings on either side of the trail. The trail surface transitions from a sandy gravel mixture to mostly dirt. There are many mud holes throughout the remainder of the trail that will need to be traversed. The scenery around the trail remains similar to the first half of the trail; however, there is more elevation change. This trail is open year-round; however, snow conditions on certain parts of the trail can impact its difficulty.

Difficulty
This trail can be completed by all individuals, given the correct vehicle setup. The eastern portion of the trail is very narrow and has very poor sight lines. Additionally, there is little space to allow for vehicles to pass one another. This portion of the trail also has a large number of mud holes that need to be crossed. These vary in depth depending on rainfall but typically average 4 to 6 inches in depth. As the trail travels further west, it opens up, and the surface transitions into a gravel and sand mixture, where sight lines also improve.
