Trail Overview
NFS 5274 is a VERY overgrown bidirectional off-road trail located within the Manistee National Forest. Starting from the south end you'll start at a large dispersed camping area right next to Dowling Creek Trail (NFS 5406). If you plan on camping here, PLEASE TREAD LIGHTLY, and please seek more information at the local DNR Office/Ranger Station prior to camping here. As you continue on the trail, it starts off in a very thick section of overgrowth. Just a heads up. Eventually the trail transitions into a dense forest area that is beautiful and much more forgiving. The trail finishes at the Caberfae Highway (M-55). Most of this trail consists of dirt, grass, and sand. Like most of Michigan trails, conditions are dependent on the weather. Recent rainfall can cause downed trees, washouts, & mud holes. This trail doesn't see a lot of traffic, and therefore has a LARGE amount of overgrowth. This also means that after recent bad weather, downed trees are a high possibility. Come prepared. Even though this trail isn't trafficked regularly, be sure to take in the beauty of the tunneling trees in the second half. It's a sight to see. Regardless of the conditions, this is a fun trail with other cool trails nearby!
