Trail Overview
NFS 5269 is a VERY overgrown out-and-back off-road trail located within the Manistee National Forest. The first half of the trail is pretty smooth sailing with it being a mostly dirt/gravel road in a dense forest. The trail veers and continues throughout the dense forest, except it's not nearly as trafficked. This is where the overgrown part comes in. Even though it is heavily overgrown, there are a lot of beautiful plants, flowers, and trees to view along the trail. The end of the trail finishes with a loop at a large dispersed camping area. If you plan on camping here, PLEASE TREAD LIGHTLY, and please seek more information at the local DNR Office/Ranger Station prior to camping here. Like most Michigan trails, conditions are dependent on the weather. Recent rainfall can cause downed trees, washouts, & mud holes. This trail doesn't see a lot of traffic and therefore has a LARGE amount of overgrowth. This also means that after recent bad weather, downed trees are a high possibility. Come prepared. Even though this trail isn't trafficked regularly, be sure to take in the beauty of the tunneling trees in the second half. It's a sight to see. Regardless of the conditions, this is a wonderful trail with other cool trails nearby!
