History

The town of Gay, Michigan, was named for Joseph E. Gay, a founder of mining companies, and its history centers on copper mining and lumbering in the Keweenaw Peninsula, rather than being a place of gay historical significance. The town's history is characterized by the "boom and bust" cycle of the copper mills, which brought people for mining and processing copper, only to leave after the mills closed in the early 1930s.
