Trail Overview

Camp Hays Road is located in Dickinson County, Michigan, within the Crystal Falls Forest. This runs from its intersection with Carney Lake Road and runs to Benton Lake Road South. This trail is an excellent way, along with Carney Lake Road, to quickly navigate to or from the Iron Mountain area trails to the Norway Trail System, rather than taking the longer northern ring trails. This trail navigates through thick forests for the majority of its length. Riding from the north to the south, the trail will begin with roads that can easily accommodate two vehicles; however, the trail quickly narrows and remains two-track until its endpoint. The trail surface is mostly sand and dirt. While this trail is technically open to all vehicle types, there is a short point in the trail that is gate-width restricted. This can impact the travel of some types of larger vehicles. Like most areas within the Crystal Falls Forest, cell service is limited, making offline maps an excellent choice. Additionally, a portion of this trail is a groomed snowmobile trail from December 1st through March 31st.

Difficulty

This trail can be navigated by riders of all experience levels. The terrain on the trail is relatively mild, with only a few spots where potential water crossings may occur after rain. Portions of this trail, due to the loose dirt surface, can become quite slick after rain. This trail is very narrow, with most of the trail only being wide enough for vehicles to pass in a couple of areas. Most places on the trail will require one vehicle to reverse to an open area to allow traffic to pass.
