Trail Overview
Bowman Trail West is an exciting, short, and scenic bidirectional trail within the Traverse City Forest Management Unit. Located just south of highway M-72 between Williamsburg and Kalkaska, this trail is easily accessible. Starting from the east end of the power line row, you'll start on a sandy, grassy, dirt two-track into the forest. 0.2 miles into the trail, you'll enter the thick of the forest. Here you'll find awe-inspiring pine trees in abundance. As you continue to navigate the route, you'll twist and turn as you descend the trail. There are typically several places with exposed tree roots and minor washouts. Please TREAD LIGHTLY so future generations can enjoy these public spaces. Like most of Michigan trails, conditions are dependent on the weather. Recent rainfall can cause unfavorable conditions on the trail, including downed trees, mud holes, and washouts. Come Prepared! Most of this trail is only wide enough for 1 vehicle, with limited places to pass. This is not a very difficult trail at all, but it contains a lot of fun and beauty, and gives access to other great trails nearby. At the western end of the trail, you'll encounter a reforestation area just before the trail finishes at the intersection of Roots Lake Trail. Regardless of the conditions or length of this trail, it's a fantastic route to explore with a lot of fun to be had! As always, again, PLEASE TREAD LIGHTLY and be respectful of our public lands so future generations can have access to these trails!
