Trail Overview

This is an "in and out" trail beginning at the point where Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Wexford, and Missaukee counties meet. It can be challenging depending on whether the ground is wet. Head south on East Seeley Road onto a full-width dirt road straddling the line between Missaukee and Wexford counties. After 0.6 miles, the road will end. Proceed over a small dip onto a seasonal road. After the initial dip, the road will be dirt and wide enough for a single vehicle to pass. It will continue south on a gentle grade over a hill. After cresting the hill, there will be a fork in the road - one section goes to the southeast, and the other heads west. Both are pretty fun. The west section heading dead-ends with a loop to make turning around easy. This section of trail has several rutted mud holes that are 12+ inches deep in places. There is some opportunity to bypass some of the mud, but even the bypasses would be difficult without four-wheel drive. The southeast section also dead ends on a bank of the Manistee River. This section begins down a muddy clay hill that can be off-camber. The consistency of the hill gives the trail its name. It doesn't look like much from the top, but due to ruts and the slippery mud, it can be challenging to climb back up. You may need recovery gear depending on how wet the ground is. Four-wheel drive is essential. After getting to the bottom of the hill, the road passes through one or two mud holes. There are excellent views of the Manistee River from a high embankment. At the end of the trail is a large open area that would make a fantastic campsite or location to have an evening fire right on the river.
