Trail Overview

This is a dirt road from Moosehead Lake providing access to the famous Golden Road. Sias Hill Road provides a great introduction to the North Maine Woods' flagship routes. Dirt roads are well-maintained for such a remote area. Washouts are common, and potholes are plentiful. Tread carefully and be nimble, as this road is typically traveled at speeds. The route begins on the east side of First Roach pond, travels north just over 14 miles, and climbs from 950 feet to 1,623 feet. NOTE: 4 miles north of Kokadjo, the trail goes straight. Most traffic bears left here to keep to the sections that are "more maintained".

History

This road provides access to the North Maine Woods by connecting the Moosehead Lake region with the Golden Road. Atop Sias Hill, there are two large stone pillars as if they were used as a gate in the past. It is my belief that this area was a logging checkpoint back in the day, during peak logging operations in the North Maine Woods.
