Trail Overview

Turkey Creek Cemetery Road FS 413 is a gravel forest service road through the inland center-south Kentucky section, of the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area. The Turkey Creek Cemetery Road features a road that parallels to the north of Turkey Creek, and to the north of the road is a hillside with a fair amount of water runoff that channels passing over the road and then ultimately to the creek. Along with the shade of the dense trees on both sides of the road, the rainwater has its fair share of influence on the road, often leaving the trail wet, exposing the natural coarse gravel, washing down to dirt in places, leaving surface mud, and potential small water collection. The significance of the road is the destination of the connection to the North/South hiking trail and the Turkey Creek Cemetery both located at the east endpoint of the road. The gem though, if not scarred by the cemetery's proximity is the dispersed camp found on this road, at the spot known as Schoolhouse Hollow, which is found at 36.74554, -88.05761. Please treat the camp with care, it is evidently someone's favorite spot, and the convenience of it is undeniable, it is just too good to ruin.

Difficulty

Turkey Creek Cemetery Road is a simple gravel road but is a less maintained 400 road, it is given a base rating of 2/10, consisting of a strong influence of rainwater from the hillside it tracks along. Expect washboards, potholes, mounding of the gravel, several spots where the gravel fades to dirt, with the high likelihood of being surface mud and potential water collection only amounting to splash level depths (less than 6"), or mild signs of erosion in the bottoms and on the few small grades from water channelizing down the road towards the Turkey Creek.

History

Turkey Creek Cemetery is one of the more chilling ones at LBL, featuring a few recent-day burials of 2019 and 2021, showing that some of these cemeteries are still severing the families that they are historically tied to, the early history of this cemetery dates back to 1877, with lives that reach as far back as 1826. Please respect those who came before us, leave the cemetery the same or better than you found it.
