Trail Overview
Sand Lick Road begins in the heart of Powell County, Kentucky, and offers an off-road route that weaves through a mix of dirt and gravel surfaces. The road starts with a relatively easy drive, featuring a few uneven sections and occasional rocky spots that require a high-clearance 4WD vehicle. As the trail progresses, it becomes more challenging with deeper ruts, large puddles, and mud pits, particularly after heavy rainfall. Some sections also feature water crossings that may become impassable during wetter conditions. The route is mostly rural, surrounded by forests of oak, hickory, and pine, with occasional clearings offering scenic views of the surrounding landscape. The trail does not have official staging or parking areas, but there are informal spots near the trail's entrance for vehicles to park. There are no restroom facilities along the route, so it's advisable to plan ahead. Along the way, off-roaders can enjoy wildlife sightings, including deer and turkey, and access nearby hiking and camping spots in the Red River Gorge and Daniel Boone National Forest. Though traffic is light during weekdays, weekends see more visitors, especially during peak seasons. The trail is open year-round, but winter conditions can make parts of it treacherous.
