Trail Overview

Stroud Lake is a beautiful and slightly challenging trail in the Lemhi range overlooking the Lemhi valley and Leodore. It is the third lake in a trifecta of glacial moraine lakes, remnants of the last ice age. The trail starts fairly mild, but quickly turns to larger rocks, steep and narrow passages through trees, multiple climbs and descents on moraines, and some off camber sections. Wide vehicles or long wheelbases would not be advised on this trail, as you will find yourself wedged between trees, and with minimal places to turn around, it is best to complete the trail to the lake. It would also be wise to carry a chainsaw, as often the trail is blocked by fallen trees. Once you reach the lake, you will be rewarded with stunning mountain views, hanging valleys high above, jagged mountain tops, and crystal clear ice-cold water nestled in a deep canyon.

Difficulty

There are two water crossings you must complete, the first one is mild and easy to cross around midsummer. The second is a larger drop in and exit, with multiple large rocks to avoid. Ground clearance of 10"+ would be recommended, and a minimum of 33" tires to clear the large rocks and small ledges that make up the majority of this trail. Large trucks, wide axles, or stock height vehicles will struggle to complete this trail due to tight, narrow trees and challenging terrain.

History

Stroud, Everson, and Dairy Lake are glacial moraine lakes. As you run these trails, be on the lookout for U-shaped valleys, glacial erratics, moraines, and hanging valleys that are all remnants of the area's glacial past.
