Trail Overview

This trail offers a quick and rewarding escape from town, culminating in stunning panoramic views of the Snake River. Multiple spurs branch off the main track, each leading to the canyon rim for spectacular overlooks of the water below. Drivers are given plenty of variety with a choice between deep, suspension-flexing ruts or more conservative, shallow lines. However, the terrain here is unique; the soil consists of a fine, powdery dust that becomes incredibly slick even when dry. The most critical factor for this route is the weather. You should strictly avoid this area after recent rainfall, as the fine dirt transforms into a "greasy" mud. It is not uncommon to find discarded floor mats along the trail--a clear sign of previous travelers who became stuck and tried to find traction. For this specific spur, the final 20 yards traverse a section of exposed lava rock, though the stones are generally smooth and manageable rather than large or tire-cutting sharp. This trail also typically has sagebrush growing up between the tracks, something to be aware of as the sagebrush grows and starts to dry out.

Difficulty

The primary challenge of this route is the unique soil composition, which consists of a fine, silty powder that can become exceptionally deep and slippery in the ruts. While the trail offers a clear choice between aggressive, suspension-testing ruts and shallower, more manageable lines, the lack of traction in the dust requires consistent momentum and careful throttle control. Because this specific dirt becomes "grease" when wet, this rating applies strictly to dry conditions; extreme caution is advised if there is any moisture in the forecast.
