Trail Overview
Sagehen Flat 121 is a pretty fun trail overall and a great option if you're just getting started or looking for a fun and faster ride. The first mile is wide and fairly smooth--almost feels like a maintained road--so you can ease into things without worrying about obstacles right away. In this section, you can get some great views of Salmon, Idaho, the surrounding area, and the mountains. Around mile 1.6, make sure to take the left fork at the "Know Before You Go" sign. From there, you'll run into a few light climbs and descents, but nothing steep or technical. Most of the trail up to about the halfway point stays wide enough for two full-size vehicles, with a mix of gravel and dirt and just a few, relatively shallow ruts. Once you get past roughly the 5.5-mile mark, things start to change a bit. The trail becomes rockier (still nothing bigger than about 6 inches tall), narrows down to mostly single-vehicle width, and you'll hit a few slightly off-camber sections. Around mile 6.5, full-size rigs might brush up against some sagebrush, so expect a little pinstriping if you're in a wider vehicle. The surface also shifts more toward dirt and rock in this second half, and there aren't many pullouts, so passing oncoming traffic can take a bit of patience. Overall, it's still a mellow trail--just with a little more character as you go deeper in.

Difficulty
Although the first half of this trail is easy going, the second half of it is narrow, uneven, has some ruts, loose rocks up to 6 inches tall, potential mud holes, and fairly mild climbs. When it is covered with snow, this trail will be much more difficult.
