Trail Overview
River Bluff, also known as BLM 118, is the main access road as you head into the BLM land east of Salmon, Idaho. It's a pretty straightforward drive overall, with most of the road wide enough for two full-size vehicles, though there are a few short stretches where it narrows down to a single vehicle width. In dry conditions, just about any vehicle can make it through without much trouble, but after rain or snowmelt, the dirt surface can get pretty muddy--so having 4x4 is a good idea. The road is mostly dirt with a few brief rocky sections, but nothing technical. You'll run into some ruts along the way, occasionally up to about 8 inches deep, which can create a few light off-camber spots, but they don't last long. At the start of the road, there's a large parking area along with vault toilets and a small picnic spot, making it a convenient place to stage. Toward the north end, the last little stretch of the road becomes one vehicle wide with a bit more off camber. Near here, the road branches out into a mix of motorized and non-motorized trails, giving you plenty of options to explore further.
