Trail Overview
This 6-mile segment of Hay Knapp Creek single-track is a bit easier than the northern segment of Hay Knapp Creek, but it is still full of moderate challenges that will keep you on your toes. The north end starts on Basin Butte Red Mountain Road, and it's pretty rocky and steep in the beginning, with sections full of cobble. It has shelfy side-hilling sections where the trail is narrow and covered in small pieces of loose rock. Like many of the trails in the area, the trail goes through a burn area, so there is always potential for newly downed logs. This trail has a lot of tight maneuvers and features that come up suddenly that make it so you can't let your guard down. You need to be alert on this trail, watching out for rocks, roots, and tight turns that come up from nowhere. The trail feels less predictable, and harder to see what's coming up. It also has small switchbacks going downhill, like S turns, small ledges, and moderate creek crossings. The river goes through the trail at one point, too, with lots of water on the trail. It's a pretty fun single track with lots of good challenges.
