Trail Overview

BLM 122 is a lightly traveled trail that takes a bit of attention to follow, but offers a nice mix of terrain along the way. To access it, take Sagehen Flat Road, turn right at the "Know Before You Go" sign onto BLM 123, then shortly after, take a left at the fork onto 122. Early on, you'll hit a short, slightly steep climb with some ruts and light off-camber--this is one of the more notable spots on the trail. From there, the trail continues up and over rolling hills with a mix of slight to moderately steep climbs and descents. It's mostly dirt with only a few short rocky sections (nothing over about 6 inches), but you will encounter some ruts (up to about 8 inches) and occasional off-camber areas throughout. The trail stays one vehicle wide with a few limited passing spots. Navigation can be a bit tricky--around mile 1.5 and again near 1.9 miles, you'll need to take the right fork both times to stay on 122, even though the more obvious path continues onto other trails. As you get farther from Salmon, the trail becomes less traveled, and it eventually ends at private property near a house and fence. It can also get sloppy after rain or snowmelt.

Difficulty

This trail is rated at its difficulty due to frequent ruts, light off-camber sections, and multiple moderate climbs and descents. The narrow width and less obvious route-finding at key forks add to the challenge, especially for first-time users. While not very rocky or highly technical, this brings the trail to a two.
