Bald Mountain Lookout (FS 377A) is a 1.2-mile point-to-point gravel road that takes riders up to the Bald Mountain Lookout Tower. The trail is a steep and consistent climb, maintaining a 10% grade for its entire length. The Bald Mountain Lookout Tower is available for rent through recreation.gov. Please be respectful of folks staying at the tower. FS 377A is open year-round to vehicles. There is also a picnic table and warming hut at the lookout; however, as of 9/6/25, the warming hut has seen better days.

Difficulty
Bald Mountain Lookout (FS 377A) is a decently maintained gravel road. It is steep, but without obstacles for most of the year. As with any trails in this area, it is unchallenging in the late spring, summer, and fall. During winter, this area is known to get decent snowpack, making the difficulty unpredictable.
History
Constructed in 1964 on one of the highest peaks in the Hoodoo Mountain Range and used as a Forest Service fire lookout until 1984, the Bald Mountain Lookout allows its visitors to enjoy spectacular sunrises and sunsets, views of the honey-colored rolling hills of the Palouse, star gaze and see wildlife such as bald eagles, moose, elk, and even bear. Rising 50 feet from the ground, at 5,334 feet above sea level, this rustic getaway can be reached by high clearance vehicles (no trailers), and comes equipped with heat, a cook stove, and sleeps up to four guests comfortably.
