Trail Overview

This is a short, but very fun trail for all OHVs up the back of South Shale Ridge. Start with an easy climb, then drop down to Dry Fork. There are great lookout spots and option to connect to Dry Fork trail, as well as the loop to Hunter Canyon Overlook. Limited parking. Open all year, but may close unexpectedly for weather.

Difficulty

Moderate. Much of the route is an easy two-track along sidehills. One short section of shelf road is slightly more intimidating. Do NOT drive when wet. Even a slight rain turns trail dangerously slick and gums up tires. When dry, trail is suitable for stock, high-clearance, 4-wheel-drive SUVs and pickup trucks.

Access Description

Get off I-70 at De Beque, Exit 62, and head north to gas station. From gas station continue north on Roan Ck. Rd., C.R. 45, over river for 3.8 miles. Turn left on XY Road, C.R. 200, heading west. At 10 miles, turn left towards High Lonesome Ranch. Trail starts on left after another half mile.
