Trail Overview

Rabbit Ears Peak is a short trail, but very challenging and fun for experienced drivers. Enjoy stunning views from the top and find camping along FS 311. This is a heavily used area for hikers so please be respectful, taking care to pull all the way over for those on foot. This trail is open July 1 through November.

Difficulty

Moderate. Embedded rock, muddy and steep in places. Stock vehicles will find a rocky climb at Waypoint 02 quite challenging, but careful tire placement should prevail. High clearance and 4-wheel-drive low are musts. Last 0.2 mile is very steep and narrow with tight trees and little room to turn around at the end.

History

The distinctive rabbit ears look is most prominent from the southeast looking northwest. Over the years, the tips of the ears have eroded due to the softness of the rock, an ancient volcanic plug. Still, the landmark remains a beacon for travelers crossing the Gore Range into Yampa Valley.
