Trail Overview

Nipple Peak is an intermediate 7-mile single track in the Routt National Forest north of Steamboat, Colorado that is full of beautiful meadows, shelfy sections, tight curves, rock sections, and big roots. The trail is really silty, making it rather dusty, especially on hot summer days. The trail goes through a good mix of tree sections where there is good shade, and big wide open meadows where you get a lot of sun. The scenery is awesome as you ride through sage brush and aspen trees in the meadows, and through exposed mountainsides when the trail gets narrower and shelfier. Some of the challenges on this trail include big roots, exposure, and very tight curves in the meadows. The west half of the trail after the road crossing is harder with even more roots and rocks. A lot of the roots are dry, so they aren't slippery. There are a couple of small switchbacks on loose dirt near the west end of the trail. The single track ends when it turns into the Nipple Peak ATV trail and widens up to a two-track.

Access Description

Access the Hahn's Peak Trail System by taking Routt County Road 129 north of Hahn's Peak Village towards Columbine to access the National Forest. The dirt bike trails here are very spread out, so you will have to take several forest service roads and ATV trails to connect many of the trails, but you can stage in different zones with plenty of camping based on which trails you want to ride. Some of the popular staging/camping areas are Little Red Park off of Red Park Road (FS 409), or off of Whiskey Park Road (FS 550). There are several days worth of trails here and it's a very popular spot for dirt bikers and family camping in the summer. Most of the trails don't open until mid-June or July, and there can typically still be snow drifts and uncut logs in early summer. This area has a lot of beetle kills, so downed trees are common. There is no cell service except for on top of some of the peaks.
