Take this drive from Winter Park to the popular Byers Peak Hiking Trail. There are a lot of different things to enjoy there from hiking and biking, to camping and offroading. Unlicensed vehicles are not allowed on some portions of this trail. Open June 15 to November 15.

Easy. Mostly graded roads. Suitable for high-clearance 2-wheeldrive vehicles when dry. More narrow and steep at the top.

History

Byers Peak was named after William N. Byers, co-founder of Colorado's first newspaper, the Rocky Mountain News, in 1859. In 2009, the paper went out of business after 150 years.

Access Description

Head west on Vasquez Road from the south end of downtown Winter Park. Continue straight as you go by both ends of Van Anderson Drive. After 1 mile, pavement ends. Continue straight on F.S.148 as it turns southwest.
