Trail Overview

The Beginner Trail is one of the easiest ATV trails in the Rampart Range Recreation Area. It starts directly from the northern trailhead off State Highway 67 and winds its way south for 12 miles until it intersects with the Devil's Head Spur. The Beginner Trail parallels Rampart Range Road for most of the 12 miles, with many bail-outs to get back on Rampart Range Road (for licensed vehicles only). This trail has several new official reroutes to get the trail farther away from the road to make it safer for new riders. It's very easy the whole time. The trail is a wide dirt two-track covered in pea-gravel, and it winds through the pine trees and goes next to big granite boulders. It's very curvy, so it's smart to check up on the corners and always watch for oncoming traffic. Riding north to south, the trail has steady declines, losing 1,600 feet of elevation. The harder parts of this trail include some shallow ruts and a slippery surface due to the pea gravel. This is a great place for new riders to learn to ride trails in an easy setting, but this area can get very crowded on weekends. This trail also serves the purpose of being the easiest trail to take back to the northern staging area when you are in the southern portion of the trail system since OHVs aren't allowed on Rampart Range Road.

Access Description

The Rampart Range Recreation Area is an extensive trail system in the Pike National Forest southwest of Sedalia, Colorado. There are several trailheads, but it is most commonly accessed from the north off of North State Highway 67. This is a highly maintained and regulated trail system; make sure you have your OHV registration card and decals. There are first-come-first-serve paid campsites and several restrooms. The area closes seasonally by December 1st and reopens in the spring sometime in April or May based on weather and mud conditions. All ATV trails in the area are designated for vehicles 50 inches or less and are mostly easy to intermediate difficulty, while the single tracks are more difficult. Note that only licensed vehicles are allowed on Rampart Range Road, so there are often separate trailheads at the start and end of each trail.
