Trail Overview
Starting just off Highway 78, this expansive two to three-vehicle-wide route weaves in and out of numerous washes where all steps stay under 18 inches. Sand and gravel form the base while 2 to 3-foot sand walls bracket both sides, creating a natural corridor. Large desert trees, bushes, and ocotillo crowd the edges, making this feel more enclosed than many area trails. Power lines overhead provide a reliable navigation reference as you wind through the terrain. The route passes Western Mines Road BLM 541, BLM 539 NW, and BLM 619 along its length. Behind it all, the Imperial Sand Dune Recreation Area rises as a dramatic backdrop. You'll find ruts, washboards, and off-camber sections peppered throughout. Keep your eyes peeled for deer that frequent this corridor. This is a limited-use area, so stick to designated roads only and bring four wheel drive as it's required.

Difficulty
The northwest to southeast stretch rates a 2 with manageable conditions, while the north-south segment bumps up to a 3 with more demanding terrain. Those numerous wash crossings, though under 18 inches, add up over the distance. Ruts, washboards, and off-camber patches keep you engaged throughout. Four wheel drive isn't just recommended here, it's required. High clearance helps with the wash steps and uneven terrain.
