Trail Overview

As you begin from Verdi, the paved road is great, then you begin the uphill, which is a very hard-packed 1.5 1.5-wide road with some small, sharp, pointed rocks. As you get closer to the top, it begins to smooth out a bit. At the top, there is a wide open space for parking or staging. Currently, the sign at the top is missing, so go to the left at the fork. The next section that goes up and over is okay for most vehicles. At the bottom, continue straight, but if you want to go for a swim, turn left. Continue for the next few miles and enjoy a nice meadow to your right with some cattle grazing, but be careful of the ruts due to travel in the snow runoff season. At the left turn in the map that goes to Sardine, there is no sign, so pay attention to the map. We stopped near the tree on the left side to enjoy the breeze and marvel at the twisted trees as seen in the photos. After heading back down the way we came in, there was a small creek, but nowhere to disperse camp. Turn left at the bottom and head North. There are some interesting plaques on the left side of the road describing what was back in this area in the late 1800s and early 11900s. As you head further North, the road widens and the scars of wildfires are abundant. There is food and gas in Loyalton, but not much. Be aware that Sierra County has signs up basically saying, ONLY PLATED vehicles on any of the main roads. I talked to the Sheriff a few years back, nd he said this was too small a number of folks speeding and such, and the locals forced the hand of the Sheriff to enforce the law.
