Trail Overview
Tucki Mountain Road is situated off Emigrant Canyon Road. The trailhead is not marked, so proceed cautiously and scan to your left for the trail. This is an out-and-back trail that is 10 miles one way. Initially, the trail is a smooth dirt and gravel road that appears to have been groomed. Throughout the entire trail, the terrain remains easy, leading to the mine. The trail winds and curves through Telephone Canyon, passing a Wilderness Restoration Sign. This section of the trail leads to a scenic 2-mile hike to an arch and spring. The trail continues through picturesque mountain views. After the first mile, there are ample camping sites available. At the trail's end, it terminates at the Tucki Mine, with two buildings and a concrete structure. There is a posted sign warning of the dangers of the various mine openings. On the return journey, make a right turn onto a "spur" trail that ascends 0.7 of a mile with an elevation gain of 499 feet. This spur trail is composed of loose shale rock, so 4WD low range is highly recommended, along with lower tire air pressure. The views from this location are spectacular. Take the opportunity to capture photographs and immerse yourself in the breathtaking scenery. High Clearance vehicles are not required for all Backcountry travel, but are highly recommended. Check for info and closures on the NPS website. Expect minimal washboard and packed gravel suitable for non-High Clearance vehicles in the Front country. Motorcycles and Dirtbikes always require a license plate.
