Trail Overview

This 4.2-mile-long singletrack is really fun and scenic, with some more advanced rock obstacles. From the north end, it starts off with a half-mile climb with dry roots and troughs through a dusty, dry forest of Douglas fir trees and really loose dirt. It connects with Trail 1-3 on a wide and flat shelf road that goes along the edge of the hillside, covered in loose rocks, stick debris, and a few downed logs. It eventually narrows up into more of a singletrack and goes out onto an open hillside with a view out towards the mountains, and comes up to a few major rock obstacles in a row. They are wide sections of angled and diagonal layers of embedded rock, like cut slabs. They aren't too difficult to go down, but will be more technical to go back up (when going south to north) because of multiple layers of off-camber rock slab in a row, with cracks that can pinch your tire. There are multiple lines to choose from, but they will require some more advanced skills. The trail turns back into a wide road segment that looks like it's been cleared and widened for forestry work, but later narrows up again and goes through some tree tunnels, and has a couple of really tight switchbacks as it descends down to intersect with Trail 1.

Difficulty

This is an upper intermediate trail due to 3 or 4 major rock features that occur in the northern half of the trail. The trail also has some exposure, narrow sections, and a couple of tight switchbacks that could be a challenge for less experienced riders.

Access Description

The Rock Creek Trail System is located in the Eldorado National Forest near the town of Georgetown, California. Take Wentworth Springs Road east from the town of Georgetown, and follow the signs for either the Mace Mill Staging Area or the Bald Mountain Staging Area. Both are small and primitive staging areas with space for several vehicles to park and a small trailer turn around. The third staging area, 5 Corners, is also small and primitive, located by either taking Rock Creek Road or FS 12N72 south of Wentworth Springs Road. The trails are open year-round, but close often during wet conditions, so it is advised to call the Georgetown Ranger District for the status of the trail system: (530) 334-6477. The trails are well-marked and highly maintained, ranging from easy to advanced.
