Trail Overview

This is a seasonal ATV loop, open to motorized use from May 11 to November 9. The trail looks mostly ridden by dirt bikes, as it doesn't connect to any other ATV trails in the area. The trail is a 1.5-mile-long loop off a road portion of the Rock Creek Loop. It's mostly flat, with long straight sections through shaded tree corridors of oaks, pines, and manzanitas, sometimes like a tree tunnel as the branches hang down really low. There are a couple of fallen branches at head height you have to watch out for. The terrain is really unique as it goes through a mix of dry and dusty dirt in the more sun-exposed areas, versus lusher sections with mossy rocks and more shade. It's overall really easy with no major obstacles, and is easy to follow, but could be kind of narrow and off-camber for quad riders in spots, making it more ideal for dirt bikes.

Difficulty

It's overall very easy for dirt bikers, but would be rather narrow for ATVs in a few spots, which makes it more difficult for ATVs. Although there aren't any major rock obstacles, there are a couple of spots with deeper ruts and a sloped off-camber surface that would make it more difficult for ATVs as well.

Access Description

The Rock Creek Trail System is located in the Eldorado National Forest near the town of Georgetown, California. Take Wentworth Springs Road east from the town of Georgetown, and follow the signs for either the Mace Mill Staging Area or the Bald Mountain Staging Area. Both are small and primitive staging areas with space for several vehicles to park and a small trailer turnaround. The third staging area, 5 Corners, is also small and primitive, located by either taking Rock Creek Road or FS 12N72 south of Wentworth Springs Road. The trails are open year-round, but close often during wet conditions, so it is advised to call the Georgetown Ranger District for the status of the trail system: (530) 334-6477. The trails are well-marked and highly maintained, ranging from easy to advanced.
