Trail Overview
This 4.5-mile out-and-back trail starts off Mill Canyon Road and ventures through diverse terrain characterized by challenging surface conditions and evolving landscapes. The trail surface consists primarily of sand lined with brush, though extensive ruts caused by water erosion require careful tire placement throughout to avoid complications. The route begins in a tall pine forest environment, with evidence of recent forest fire visible in the surrounding area, adding historical context to the journey. As the trail progresses, the brush becomes increasingly thick and overgrown, making contact with vehicle sides unavoidable and creating a tight corridor that will brush against your vehicle throughout many sections. Pinstriping is highly likely given the narrow, overgrown conditions. The trail climbs steadily, and as elevation increases, the trees begin to thin, revealing excellent views of the hills and mountains surrounding the area. Surface conditions become rockier during the climb, and slight off-camber sections appear, requiring attention to vehicle angle and balance. The shelf road section eventually ends, transitioning into a valley environment featuring scattered pine trees and some very cool rock formations that provide interesting geological features along the route. In this valley section, the trail becomes very narrow and increasingly sandy, with brush continuing to make contact with vehicles as the corridor tightens further. The trail concludes just before entering another pine forest, ending at a stunning overlook with views of the mountains above Highway 395 visible just below, providing a dramatic and rewarding destination after the challenging, narrow drive.

Difficulty
This trail has a challenging difficulty rating (3) based on the extensive water erosion ruts requiring precise tire placement, increasingly thick and overgrown brush that will pinstripe vehicles, very narrow sandy sections, off-camber portions combined with rockier surfaces, and shelf road navigation demands. The primary challenges include avoiding rut entrapment through careful line selection, accepting inevitable vehicle contact with overgrown vegetation, managing narrow sandy conditions where the trail wants to pull vehicles into brush, and handling off-camber rocky climbs safely.
