Trail Overview

This is an unmaintained, overgrown dirt road through a severely burned and recovering forest. The route is defined by deep ruts, exposed rocks, and pinstriping brush. This road serves as a remote access or connector that passes near the private residences of the Sugar Pine community and the Sugar Pine Christian Camp, requiring respectful driving. The trail crosses the scenic California Creek, which has a small waterfall.

Difficulty

Rated Easy (Rated 2), this trail is suitable for most stock high-clearance SUVs or trucks. The primary challenges are only occasional ruts and some minor overgrowth, which may cause light pinstriping. No technical driving skill is required to complete the route quickly.

History

The trail is located in the heart of the historic town site for the Madera Sugar Pine Lumber Company. The adjacent Sugar Pine Christian Camp and the surrounding private community of Sugar Pine stand on land historically used by the massive logging operation (which operated a 140-mile narrow-gauge train line and a 54-mile lumber flume until 1931). The entire area was catastrophically affected by the 2020 Creek Fire, which necessitated the ongoing closures and repair work.
