Trail Overview

This sandy trail features an uneven surface with off-camber sections, ruts, and lots of washboards, making it a very bumpy trail throughout. The route cuts through an open meadow with mountain views 360 degrees around, creating panoramic scenery. The landscape looks like a barren wasteland, adding to the remote desert experience. At mile 0.75, the trail climbs out of the flat area and starts winding through some hills, transitioning from open meadow to more dynamic terrain. The trail ends at the Wide Open Spaces Trail. This is in the Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Open Riding Area, the largest in California, where registered OHV and highway legal vehicles are allowed.

Difficulty

The combination of uneven surface, off-camber sections, ruts, and lots of washboards creates a challenging and very bumpy ride that will test your vehicle and driving skills. The climb at mile 0.75 and subsequent winding through hills add elevation changes and tighter navigation. Four wheel drive and high clearance are recommended for the ruts and uneven terrain. The washboards will be particularly jarring and slow your pace considerably.
