Trail Overview

Welcome to the gateway of the high country! Red Lakes Road (FS 8S042) is your primary ticket to an alpine wonderland, serving as the main artery for explorers heading toward the stunning trio of Strawberry, West, and Mirror Lakes. This 3.3-mile Forest Service road is generally a wide, welcoming two-lane track, but don't let its size fool you; it has a bit of a rough side. The tread is a classic Sierra mix of loose dirt and grippy decomposed granite (DG), frequently interrupted by sections of chunky embedded rock that will keep your suspension working. While accessible, the route travels through areas scarred by the 2020 Creek Wildfire, offering a stark but fascinating landscape of recovery where new green growth contrasts with charred timber. It's the perfect warm-up drive before you air down for the serious 4x4 trails that branch off from the Sand Flats Staging Area.

Difficulty

While this isn't a technical rock crawl, it definitely isn't a paved highway. The Rating of 2 is well-deserved due to extended sections of rough, embedded bedrock and loose stones that can be jarring for vehicles with stiff suspension or low-profile tires. There are no major ledges or off-camber spots to fear, but the constant vibration and uneven surface mean high clearance is highly recommended for a comfortable ride. You can likely leave it in 2WD, but you'll want to take it slow to save your kidneys from the "Sierra massage."
