Trail Overview

Rainier Creek (FS 5S037) is a fantastic little connector that packs a surprising amount of visual drama into a short, 2.9-mile package. Think of it as the "scenic elevator" of the district. The trail surface is a bit of a history lesson, alternating between crunching gravel and patches of old, forgotten pavement that have long since surrendered to the elements. The drive begins in the trees but steadily climbs, eventually breaking out above the tree line and into an expansive burn area. While burn scars can be stark, here they serve a purpose: they peel back the canopy to reveal sweeping, unobstructed views of the north valley that you'd completely miss down in the timber. It connects you effortlessly to prime camping spots like the Long Meadow area, making it a high-value route for overlanders looking for a room with a view. Just be warned: the road is a narrow two-track with very limited pullouts, so keep your eyes up for oncoming traffic to avoid a long reverse.

Difficulty

This trail earns a Rating 1 for its generally benign surface conditions. You won't find rock gardens or deep mud pits here; the tread is a predictable and high-traction mix of gravel and deteriorating pavement. Any high-clearance vehicle, from a Subaru to a Silverado, can handle the terrain requirements with ease. The only real "challenge" is the width. It is a narrow two-track with limited room to pass, meaning drivers need to be alert and courteous. It's an easy Sunday drive, provided you don't mind the occasional tight squeeze.
