Trail Overview

Difficulty

Moderate: Most of the route follows wash bottoms, where conditions vary tremendously depending on recent rains. Be prepared for anything. We recommend using a GPS unit.

History

The round rocks at the Pumpkin Patch are called 'concretions.' They were formed deep under the sand by water carrying cementing precipitates that began building around an organic nucleus such as a leaf, piece of shell or a fossil. Wind eroded away the sand, bringing the rocks to the surface, where further wind erosion rounded them to their present shape. Do not remove any of the rocks. Take only pictures.
