Trail Overview

Ponderosa Fire Line - Lower (FS 6S017) is the friendly, welcoming face of a trail with a split personality. Situated below the junction with Hugh Ryan, this section behaves like a civilized forest boulevard compared to its rowdier upper half. It's a wide and easy one-lane road that invites you to roll down the windows and enjoy the scent of pine. The tread is a classic Sierra cocktail: a solid base of gravel and natural dirt, garnished with just enough embedded granite rock to keep the texture interesting without rattling your fillings. Its primary job is to serve as the main artery for the local thrill-seekers, providing direct access to a legendary menu of single-track moto trails like Cody, Sidewinder, and Sunflower. While the dirt bikes buzz off into the trees, 4x4 drivers can enjoy a mellow cruise down to Miami Creek for a peaceful lunch spot. It's the perfect warm-up lap for the area.

Difficulty

This lower section of Ponderosa Fire Line earns a Rating 1 because it is maintained to a standard that prioritizes access over obstruction. The road is wide enough to navigate comfortably without pinstriping, and the surface is primarily compacted dirt and gravel. While there are some embedded granite rocks, they are generally flush with the surface or small enough to drive over in a stock SUV without concern. There are no steep shelves, deep ruts, or off-camber sections here. It serves as a connector road, meaning almost any vehicle with decent tires and ground clearance can enjoy the drive without needing 4WD.
