Trail Overview
Pilot Peak - Lower (FS 5S012A) serves as the appetizer to the main Pilot Peak experience. This section is a tight and twisty affair that winds its way through a mix of oak and conifer forest. Unlike its rowdier upper sibling, this lower leg is more about rhythm than technical driving. The tread is a hodgepodge of surface types, shifting constantly between rutted dirt, loose gravel, and patches of old, broken pavement. It feels like a forgotten service road that nature is slowly reclaiming. While generally approachable, the road is narrow and features enough undulations to keep the drive engaging. It connects directly to the steeper upper section, making it the perfect spot to warm up your suspension and check your tire pressures before the real climb begins.

Difficulty
This lower section of Pilot Peak earns a Rating 2 primarily due to the inconsistent surface conditions. While there are no massive obstacles, the rutted dirt and deteriorating pavement create a bumpy, uneven ride that would be uncomfortable and potentially hazardous for a low-clearance sedan. High clearance is recommended to navigate the ruts and pot-holes without scraping. However, unlike the upper section (Rated 4), 4WD is typically not required here in dry conditions, though it provides added stability in the loose corners.
