Trail Overview

Nutmeg is a challenging 3.7-mile trail that features significant elevation changes, climbing over 700 feet and dropping over 700 feet throughout its length. This single-track trail winds through diverse terrain, offering spectacular views of surrounding hillsides, valleys, and distant mountains. The trail surface is very sandy with minimal rocks, creating consistently dusty conditions that can reduce visibility and traction. Throughout the route, numerous ruts from water runoff create additional challenges for navigation and vehicle control. The trail maintains a single vehicle width with dense brush and varied tree species lining both sides, requiring careful attention to vehicle positioning. Within the first quarter mile, the trail climbs to a plateau that offers beautiful mountain views toward Yosemite, providing an early reward for the challenging ascent. Approximately half a mile into the journey, the trail passes through remnants of an old forest fire area where evidence of past blazes becomes apparent. The route features extensive shelf road sections that hug canyon edges, creating dramatic exposure and requiring confident driving skills. Multiple small off-camber sections demand precise driving and can be particularly challenging for less experienced drivers. Low-hanging branches pose a hazard for taller vehicles, potentially causing damage to roof racks, antennas, or other elevated equipment. The trail zigzags around the terrain while maintaining scenic overlooks of the surrounding forest and distant hills. Fire scars remain visible throughout the canyon area, telling the story of the region's natural history. Fallen trees and branches have been cleared and pushed aside to maintain trail access, though debris may still present occasional obstacles.

Difficulty

This trail receives a difficulty rating of 3, indicating a moderate to challenging level that requires intermediate off-road driving skills. The combination of sandy surfaces with water-carved ruts, multiple off-camber sections, and narrow shelf roads demands confident vehicle control and experience with technical terrain. The significant elevation changes and exposure along canyon edges make this unsuitable for beginners or those uncomfortable with steep, narrow passages.
