Difficulty
The trail requires mandatory high clearance and 4WD (especially helpful on the descent to manage speed and engine braking). The rating is due to the uneven tread and embedded rock over the entire distance. This is a tough, non-technical climb to a well-earned summit.
History
The Mount Tom Lookout was one of the last constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in 1934. It remains an actively used fire lookout tower, standing 30 to 34 feet high, and is a major piece of Sierra fire history. The road was built to serve the tower.
