Trail Overview

This in-and-out trail starts on Superstition Mountain North BLM 196 and heads into a sandy canyon from the north, where you can see communication towers rising high up above on Superstition Mountain. The route slowly winds its way among desert bushes with 30 to 40-foot-tall sand and mud hills surrounding you, creating an enclosed and dramatic environment. The surface is mostly soft sand with scattered rocks throughout. The trail quickly gets into a very narrow canyon where you can see vivid examples of how mud walls can collapse. You'll encounter various small rock gardens with rocks up to just larger than basketball size, with a few rocks between 18 and 24 inches creating serious obstacles. The trail ends when the rocks are too large to continue, where the rating would be five plus, forcing most vehicles to turn around at this natural barrier.

Difficulty

The mostly soft sand requires four wheel drive, and airing down is essential. The very narrow canyon leaves no room for error and demands precise navigation. The various small rock gardens with rocks up to basketball size and some between 18 to 24 inches are serious technical challenges requiring high clearance, skilled line choice, and possibly spotting. The 30 to 40-foot mud walls create an enclosed environment with collapse hazards. The trail ending at impassable large rocks means you'll need to turn around carefully in the narrow canyon.
