Trail Overview

Mill Creek (FS 6S040X) is not your average shortcut; it's a slow-motion rumble through a granite rock garden. This 2.8-mile forest road serves as a rugged connector between Beasore Road (FS 5S07) and Soquel Meadow Road (FS 6S040), dropping you out just south of Greys Mountain Campground. The defining characteristic of this trail is its surface: it is almost entirely composed of embedded, jagged rock. There is very little "dirt" to cushion the ride, meaning your suspension will be working overtime as you pick your way through the stones. It's a slow-speed affair that demands patience, but the tradeoff is access to some fantastic, secluded camping spots like the Mill Run Dispersed Campsite and a massive group site tucked away in the timber. If you like your forest drives with a side of "shake, rattle, and roll," this is the trail for you.

Difficulty

This trail earns a Rating 3 not for big obstacles, but for the consistent, punishing nature of the roadbed. The tread is described as being "all rock", meaning there are few smooth sections to relax. The rocks are embedded and often sharp, requiring high clearance and durable tires (preferably aired down) to navigate without damage. A standard passenger car would likely suffer from clearance issues and potential tire punctures. It requires 4WD, not necessarily for traction, but for the control and low-speed gearing needed to crawl over the uneven surface comfortably.
